Dashavatara - Set of 10 Paintings

• Dashavatar refers to the ten primary incarnations of Lord Vishnu, one of the principal deities in Hinduism. Each incarnation, or avatar, is believed to be a manifestation of Lord Vishnu with a specific purpose or mission on Earth. The ten avatars are described in ancient Hindu scriptures such as the Puranas and the Bhagavad Gita. Here is a description of each  Dashavatar painting as follows :-

  1. Matsya Avatar (Fish Incarnation): Lord Vishnu takes the form of a giant fish to save humanity and animals during a great flood. He rescues the Vedas, the sacred scriptures, and a man named Manu, who becomes the progenitor of mankind.

  2. Kurma Avatar (Tortoise Incarnation): Lord Vishnu transforms into a gigantic tortoise to support Mount Mandara during the churning of the cosmic ocean. This avatar symbolizes stability and the preservation of the universe.

  3. Varaha Avatar (Boar Incarnation): Lord Vishnu appears as a massive boar to rescue the Earth, which had been submerged by a demon named Hiranyaksha. Varaha lifts the Earth out of the waters using his tusks and defeats the demon.

  4. Narasimha Avatar (Half-Man Half-Lion Incarnation): Lord Vishnu manifests as a half-man and half-lion to vanquish the demon king Hiranyakashipu. This avatar represents the victory of good over evil and the protection of devotees.

  5. Vamana Avatar (Dwarf Incarnation): Lord Vishnu takes the form of a dwarf Brahmin named Vamana to conquer the demon king Bali. Vamana grows in size and covers the entire universe in just three steps, restoring power to the gods.

  6. Parashurama Avatar (Warrior Sage Incarnation): Lord Vishnu appears as Parashurama, a fierce warrior sage, to rid the Earth of corrupt and arrogant rulers. He wields an axe and is regarded as the teacher of martial arts.

  7. Rama Avatar (Prince Rama Incarnation): Lord Vishnu incarnates as Prince Rama, the hero of the epic Ramayana. Rama exemplifies righteousness, honor, and the ideal human qualities. His adventures and triumphs inspire millions.

  8. Krishna Avatar (Cowherd Krishna Incarnation): Lord Vishnu appears as Lord Krishna, a divine cowherd and philosopher-statesman. Krishna imparts spiritual teachings in the Bhagavad Gita and engages in various divine pastimes.

  9. Buddha Avatar (Buddhist Incarnation): In some interpretations, Lord Vishnu is believed to have taken the form of Gautama Buddha, the founder of Buddhism. This avatar focuses on teaching non-violence, compassion, and spiritual enlightenment.

  10. Kalki Avatar (Future Incarnation): Kalki is the tenth and final avatar, which is yet to occur in the future. It is believed that Lord Vishnu will appear as Kalki at the end of the current age (Kali Yuga) to restore order and righteousness, bringing about the dawn of a new age.

  The Dashavatar signifies the continuous cycle of birth, life, and death and the divine intervention to maintain harmony in the universe. Each avatar has its unique significance and teachings, contributing to the spiritual and moral evolution of humanity.
